This is the latest update on lateral partner and counsel moves in the Washington, D.C. area. The data included in these reports is primarily derived from Firm Prospects LLC. For more details and analysis, including a list of laterals for the month, please contact Steve Nelson.

The lateral market in March was surprisingly slow, as 52 partner and counsel moves were reported down from 89 in February and 79 in January. The number of moves was also significantly lower than in March 2022, when 82 moves were reported.

Following a month with a record nine group moves, only three group moves were reported in March. Those included a litigation analytics team that joined DLA Piper from Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath, a Middle East-focused infrastructure team that joined Greenberg Traurig from Squire Patton Boggs, and a public policy group that left K&L Gates for Holland & Knight.

Other firms reporting multiple moves in March were:

  • Allen & Overy
  • Cozen O’Connor
  • Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher
  • Hirschler Fleischer
  • Offit Kurman
  • WilmerHale

Twelve lawyers came from government positions, while four joined from in-house roles.

Eighteen of the 52 lawyers (34.6 percent) were women, with ten (55.6 percent) entering as partners. That compared to 64.8 percent of the 34 men who joined their new firms as partners.

Litigation was the leading practice area represented, with seven moves. Other active practice areas included:
