This is the latest update on lateral partner and counsel moves in the Washington, D.C. area. The data included in these reports is primarily derived from Firm Prospects LLC. For more details and analysis, including a list of laterals for the month, please contact Steve Nelson.
While the number of total moves declined in June from the previous month (from 84 to 66), June was a heavy month for lateral groups, as seven different multi-lawyer transactions were reported.
The largest group moving in June was the 15-lawyer multicity Intellectual Property group that joined Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner from Dentons. That group included seven partners in DC.
Arnold & Porter reported two groups moving to their DC office in June, both of which included lawyers based in outside locations. One was a group of Litigation attorneys from Shook, Hardy & Bacon’s Kansas City and Miami offices, while the other included two partners from the Boston office of Haug Partners.
Other groups moving in June:
- A four-partner Investigations group that joined Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer from Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, two of which are stationed in DC.
- A three-partner Intellectual Property group that left Perkins Coie for Holland & Knight, two of which are located in DC.
- A two-partner Insurance Coverage group that left Lowenstein Sandler for Nossaman.
- A three-lawyer Real Estate and Litigation group that left Bethesda’s Bregman Berbert Schwartz & Gilday for the Rockville and DC offices of Miles & Stockbridge.
Three other firms reported multiple individual hires in June—Sidley Austin, Stinson, and Winston & Strawn.
Six lawyers came from government positions in June, while six others joined from in-house roles.
Twenty-one women were among the 66 moves (31.8 percent) were women, with 13 entering as partners (61.9 percent). That compared to 82.2 percent of the 45 men who joined their new firms as partners.
Litigation and Intellectual Property were by far the leading practice areas represented, with 11 moves apiece. Other active practice areas included:
