This is the latest update on lateral partner and counsel moves in the Washington, D.C. area. The data included in these reports is primarily derived from Firm Prospects LLC. For more details and analysis, including a list of laterals for the month, please contact Steve Nelson.
Lateral hiring in DC increased in January, as 57 partner and counsel moves were reported, up from 44 in December. However, lateral moves were down from January 2024, when 77 moves were reported.
Government hiring also rose in January as 12 such hires were reported, compared to nine in December. Among the agencies represented included the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Department of Health & Human Services, the Department of State, and the Federal Aviation Administration.
There were two group moves reported in December. One was a two-lawyer Labor/Employment group that left Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld for Littler Mendelson. The other was a two-partner Intellectual Property group that joined Baker & Hostetler from K&L Gates. Other firms reporting multiple hires included:

- King & Spalding
- Kirkland & Ellis
- McGuireWoods
- Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough
- Proskauer Rose
Twenty-two of the movers (38.6 percent) were women, with 13 (59.1 percent) entering as partners. That compared to 30 of the 35 men (85.7 percent) who joined their new firms as partners.
Litigation was the leading practice areas represented, with 9 moves. Other active practice areas included White Collar/Investigations (8), International Trade (5), Labor & Employment (4), Tax (4), Antitrust 93), Real Estate (3) and Corporate (3).
