This is the latest update on lateral partner and counsel moves in the Washington, D.C. area. The data included in these reports is primarily derived from Firm Prospects LLC. For more details and analysis, including a list of laterals for the month, please contact Steve Nelson.
Lateral hiring continued at a somewhat slow pace in October, as 45 partner and counsel moves were reported, down from 49 in September and 46 in August. A total of 61moves were reported in October 2022. Lateral hiring in 2023 now trails the 2022 number by 4.8 percent.
Another sign of the static lateral market was that no group moves were reported in October. Several firms did report multiple moves, including:
- Brown Rudnick
- Hunton Andrews Kurth
- Jenner & Block
- Norton Rose Fulbright
On the other hand, hiring from government doubled in October, with 12 attorneys hired directly from government positions. Six lawyers moved from in-house position.
Fifteen women were among the 45 moves (33.3 percent), with seven entering as partners (46.7 percent. That compared to 12 of the 30 men (40.0 percent) who joined their new firms as partners.
No practice area was dominant in terms of October’s moves. Leading the way were Energy, Government Contracts, and Government Relations, each with three moves.
