This is the latest update on lateral partner and counsel moves in the Washington, D.C. area. The data included in these reports is primarily derived from Firm Prospects LLC. For more details and analysis, including a list of laterals for the month, please contact Steve Nelson.


Not surprisingly, lateral movement slowed in August, as 46 partner and counsel moves were reported, down from 73 in July. A total of 53 moves were reported in August 2022.

Four different lateral groups moved in July. Those were:

  • One partner and one counsel in the International Dispute resolution area that moved from Sidley Austin to Baker Botts.
  • A two-partner Litigation group that joined Holland & Knight from Reed Smith.
  • Two lawyers who joined Duncan, Weinberg, Genzer & Pembroke from recently-disbanded Jennings Strouss & Salmon.
  • Two partners that broke away from Samek Werther Mills, including name partner Roger Samek, to form Samek & Flynn. (Their former firm, now known as Werther & Mills, added two lawyers in August as well.)

Other firms reporting multiple moves in July included:

  • King & Spalding
  • Kirkland & Ellis
  • Thompson Hine

Only two attorneys moved from government positions in August, down from 14 in July. Two lawyers moved from in-house positions.

Fifteen women were among the 46 moves (32.6 percent) were women, with 7 entering as partners (46.7 percent. That compared to 67.7 percent of the 31 men who joined their new firms as partners.

Litigation was the leading practice area represented, with seven moves. Other active practice areas included:
