This is the latest update on lateral partner and counsel moves in the Washington, D.C. area. The data included in these reports is primarily derived from Firm Prospects LLC. For more details and analysis, please contact TMG’s Steve Nelson (snelson@tmg-dc.com) or Dave Ris (dris@tmg-dc.com).
Not surprisingly, August was a relatively slow month for lateral movement, with 53 partner and counsel moves reported, down from 73 in July. However, the August figure was well above the comparable figure for August 2021, when 39 moves were reported. As a result, lateral movement for 2022 has now inched ahead of last year’s pace.
Only one group move was reported in August. Two litigation partners from the boutique law firm of CrossCastle joined Berliner Corcoran & Rowe. Other firms reporting multiple lateral moves included:
- Barnes & Thornburg
- Crowell & Moring
- Hogan Lovells
- Jenner & Block
- Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy
- Squire Patton Boggs
- Steptoe & Johnson
- Thompson Hine
Hiring from the government remained strong, with 12 lawyers coming from the public sector, including four from the Securities & Exchange Commission. Six attorneys moved from in-house positions.
Sixteen of the 53 lawyers who moved (30 percent) were women. Half of those joined their new firms as partner. That compares to 56.8 percent of men that entered their new firms as partner.
Litigation was the most active practice area, with 7 moves. Other active practice areas were International Trade (4), White Collar/Investigations (3), FDA (3), Government Contracts (3), Corporate (3), Intellectual Property (3), Securities Enforcement (3), and Consumer Protection/Advertising (3).
