This is the latest update on lateral partner and counsel moves in the Washington, D.C. area. The data included in these reports is primarily derived from Firm Prospects LLC. For more information, including a list of laterals for the month, please contact Steve Nelson here.

The pace of lateral moves continued to decrease in November, as 49 partner and counsel moves were reported, down from 61 in October. By comparison, there were 67 moves reported in October 2021. These results are consistent with media reports to a slowing of the lateral market.

Overall, the number of lateral moves in 2022 are down 3.3 percent from 2021.

Government moves also dropped somewhat with 9 moves, down from 12 in October. Three officials joined firms from the Department of Justice. Only two in-house moves were reported in November.

Only one group move was reported. That was the D.C. component of a multi-city nine-partner energy group that joined Holland & Knight from Eversheds Sutherland. At the same time, Eversheds Sutherland brought in two laterals of their own in November, one in Energy and the other in Investment Management. Other firms reporting multiple moves were:

  • Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher
  • Latham & Watkins
  • Robinson & Cole
  • Womble Bond Dickinson

Seventeen of the 49 lawyers (34.7 percent) were women, with 58.8 percent joining their new firms as partners. That compares to 62.5 percent of the 32 men that entered their new firms as partner.

Keyed by the aforementioned group, Energy tied with Litigation as the most active practice area, five moves apiece. Other active practice areas were Banking/Finance (4 moves), Antitrust (3), Intellectual Property (3), International Trade (3), and White Collar/Investigations (3).
