Politico recently noted an OpenSecrets report that state lobbying spending has largely risen since 2015. There is no great surprise that “as partisan divides ensnare congressional lawmakers in stalemates over key legislation, many lobbying firms find it faster to take their efforts to governors and state legislatures.”

But another factor driving the growth of state government relations is the growth of State Attorneys’ General practices. Indeed, many law firms are combining those practices with their overall government relations groups.  We believe that this trend will continue and may lead to mergers as law firms and lobby shops seek to strengthen their position at the state level.
