TMG’s monthly study of lateral moves in Texas revealed 37 partner and counsel moves in July 2024, up from 34 over the previous month, and up from 20 from July 2023. Overall, lateral hiring for 2024 is up over 34 percent from the previous timeframe in 2023.

Twenty-one of June’s moves occurred in Houston, 12 in the Dallas area, and 4 in Austin. All but four of the movers came from private practice with one coming from government and three from in-house positions.

Seven separate firms reported multiple moves during June with three group moves. Those included a tax group that joined Nelson Mullins, a real estate group that moved to Sheppard Mullin and a litigation group that joined Spencer Fane.

Twelve of the 36 lawyers (33%) were women, with seven (56.7 percent) entering as partners. That compared to 14 of the 24 men (also 56.7 percent) who joined their new firms as partners.

Litigation was the leading practice area represented, with seven practitioners. Other practice areas included:
